The Wallenberg Scholar program focuses on Sweden’s leading senior researchers. It was implemented because researchers need long-term funding without the distraction of pressure to secure external grants in order to carry out world-class research.

One key principle is that the grants, totaling up to SEK 20 million, can be freely used for research for five years with no restrictions.

After the end of the grant period, the research is evaluated by an international panel of experts, and the best researchers are awarded a further five-year grant.
